Peter Moss

I am an independent Vermont candidate for the U. S.Congress. This book is a selection of my political essays that appeared in newspaper columns between 2001 and 2004 and will serve as the basis for proservative legislation I will introduce if elected. Proservative means for serving the public interest and, of course, conservative means against serving the public interest. So far as I have been able to determine, the only goal of conservatives is to make the top 2% rich richer at the expense of the 98% unrich who work for a living and can't afford to bribe politicians.

In 1960, Senator Barry Goldwater of Arizona published a book titled THE CONSCIENCE OF A CONSERVATIVE. The title of my book is of course a take-off on his title, and not in a humorous way. I intend to debunk Senator Goldwater's misperceptions and conservatism generally. It is amazing how much the world has changed since 1960, yet how little has changed since 1960 in conservative misperceptions and slogans which conservative propagandists and lobbyists still use to manipulate and exploit the naive and mercilessly used underdog conservatives.

In 1964, Senator Goldwater ran against and lost to incumbent Lyndon B. Johnson. The underground media said at the time that American voters have an opportunity to choose between a kook and a crook. A majority voted for the crook, as we now know from the recently released secret telephone tapes created by LBJ.

Do you remember The Emperor's New Clothes by Hans Christian Andersen? If elected, I will be the 79-year old little boy who will shout "the emperor is naked" whenever I can be heard, "to provoke ordinary citizens to rethink the established order, to realize their democratic strength, and to rebel against the structures of privilege that lock out the majority." (As stated by Woodie Guthrie, and cited by Jim Hightower in "If the gods had meant us to vote, they would have given us candidates.")

Voters who desire secure health care, secure employment, secure social security, justice for underdogs, and a clean environment, should read this book and vote to legislate a better world.

A better world is possible if a majority of the voters will it at the ballot box.

Thank you.
